PRESURGICAL GUIDELINES

PREPARING YOUR PET FOR SURGERY

At North Rocks Veterinary Hospital (NRVH), we are dedicated to delivering exceptional surgical care that ensures the safety, comfort, and well-being of your pet. Proper preparation is essential for reducing risks and promoting a smooth recovery and so our presurgical guidelines are designed with your pet’s needs in mind.

WHY PRESURGICAL PREPARATION IS VITAL

Preparing your pet for anaesthesia and surgery minimises complications and can significantly improve their recovery. At NRVH, we prioritize your pet’s health with evidence-based practices, advanced surgical techniques, and personalised care.

FASTING INSTRUCTIONS

To reduce the risk of vomiting and aspiration during anaesthesia, we recommend the following fasting guidelines for dogs and cats:

  • Feed your pet no later than 8:00 PM the night before surgery.
  • Remove any leftover food after this time.
  • Keep water available at all times to ensure your pet stays hydrated.

Note: Fasting is not required for rabbits, guinea pigs, other small mammals. Contact us for tailored advice if your pet falls into these categories.

MORNING ADMISSION PROCESS

Pets undergoing surgery should be admitted between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM on the day of surgery. Alternatively, you can arrange for admission the evening before surgery, between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, at no additional cost. Please allow approximately 15 minutes for the admission process to:

  • Discuss any questions or concerns.
  • Confirm accurate contact information so we can reach you promptly during your pet’s procedure.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

For the safety of all pets in our care, we require that your pet’s annual vaccinations are up to date before surgery. If you’re uncertain about your pet’s vaccination status, please contact us for clarification.

SHARING IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFORMATION

Let us know if your pet has a history of:

  • Anaesthetic reactions or sensitivities.
  • Allergies to medications.
  • Recent changes in health, diet, or behaviour.

This information helps us tailor the anaesthetic and surgical approach to your pet’s unique needs.

POST-SURGERY DISCHARGE AND CARE

Most pets are ready to return home between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on the day of surgery. For complex soft tissue or orthopaedic procedures, or in cases where pets are elderly or frail, we may recommend overnight monitoring for their safety. You will be fully informed if extended care is required.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRE-NAESTHETIC DIAGNOSTICS

We offer and recommend pre-anaesthetic diagnosticsfor all pets undergoing surgery. This routinely involves a blood panel to assess overall health, which can:

  • Detect underlying conditions that may influence anaesthesia safety.
  • Allow us to customise medications or procedures for optimal results

WHY WE USE INTRAVENOUS FLUIDS (IVF) DURING SURGERY

Every pet undergoing anaesthesia at NRVH is placed on intravenous fluids. IVF provides crucial support by:

  • Maintaining stable blood pressure during anaesthesia.
  • Protecting vital organs from reduced blood flow.
  • Enhancing recovery speed and comfort after surgery.
